I converted my '97 TJ from a 5-speed to 3-speed automatic about 3 years ago which turned it into an absolute beast offroad. Converting to the automatic provided the same boost in Answer (1 of 7): Thanks for A2A In general, more the number of speeds 1. The driveability is better 2. The engine runs in a narrower speed range which is usually good for fuel economy 3. More shifting clutches and actuation overhead energy. So fuel economy gains in #2 might be compensat Automatic VS Manual Transmission How To SHIFT Gears In An Automatic Car / Manual Mode In An Automatic Car The real reason automatics are quicker than manuals | Know it All with Jason DIY 5 Speed Gearbox from Cardboard 5 Things Page 1/4. Easier To Upgrade: Upgrading a manual transmission is a bit easier in comparison to its automatic counterpart. For example, you can install a short throw shift kit to decrease time between shifts. In Cars.com's national new Toyota Tacoma inventory, only 944 examples with a manual transmission were listed at the time of writing versus 21,156 with an automatic. The EPA says the manual will an auto can be just as fast or faster than a manual, especially if you have a good tune. an auto just spools up and shifts, a manual you have to let off the gas, depress the clutch, and grab another gear. Two great examples are the AmericanMuscle.com's 2011 Mustang GT that runs 10.90s on the bottle and my supercharged 2007 Mustang, which goes 11.24 at 120 mph. Most new Subaru are using CVT,like the XV & 2L Legacy, more powerful version are using 5 speed auto, like the Legacy GT,A-line STI,the lastest sports car BRZ are using 6 speed auto. That said, those driving manual gears with high rev or high powered (TC/SC) engines will 5 speeds have the fifth gear nut (then gear) fall off. A simple thing to put back together. There is a needle bearing that can give problems. The 3-4 shift is a bit large. The stock clutch does not take a whole lot of extra power. When shifting with a stick turbo boost is lost. The 6 speed looks good from what I have seen here. Manual would have been easier to fix. The Auto can take more beating, gives you more torque on the wheels, and is easier to drive, especially with a trailer. The manual gives you better control over the rpm (typical for auto is 1800 rpm up all steepish hills, as that's the stall speed for the converter); and a slightly better fuel economy. In general, an automatic car might be better suited to those who are used to urban driving. If nothing else, not having to press the clutch on and off continuously will lessen driver fatigue. If you travel longer distances or are used to driving on faster roads, a manual car could be a better option. Having better control over the gear
