Discussion Starter · #6 · Dec 9, 2008. Update: I swapped out the transfer case over the weekend. The local salvage yard had a NP231C on the shelf for $100.00, so I bought it. Another yard sold me a shifter assembly for $40.00. They both bolted in place of the NP233 without a hitch, so now I've got a manual transfer case! Jeep. 4x4 Posi-Lok replaces the vacuum actuator with a cable operated actuator that puts the driver in control of the engagement from inside the cab. After engaging the transfer case, a one inch pull of the 4x4 Posi-Lok cable connects the right front axle to the intermediate shaft using the shift collar and fork, and 4-wheel drive is engaged! If your refferring to the 97 in your sig, then Idon't see why you couldn't convert it to a manual shift transfer case. You would probably need to get a new transfer case harness and splice a few wires to get the disconnect and instrument lights to work in addition to cutting the h*** and installing the shifter assembly and trim piece. JeffsJeep04 Install the Inner axle bearing. This goes inside the differential carrier on the pass side and is what the "short-shaft" rides on. It is NOT there in the AWD versions. Install the right side axle assembly according to the repair manual. Don't forget to check (and adjust) axle end-play IAW the manual. as for swapping to a manual 4wd shifter id replace the hubs first and see if that solves your problem for not engaging the front wheels. Smoke-. I got more information from a dealer who said the manual lever (in the '06 anyways) is actually a glorified electronic switch. He says both the dashboard switch and the manual floor lever send an elec signal to the Tcase. This makes it sound like the Tcase is the same no matter which system is in place.
