The cross-entropy (CE) method is a Monte Carlo method for importance sampling and optimization. It is applicable to both combinatorial and continuous problems, with either a static or noisy objective.. The method approximates the optimal importance sampling estimator by repeating two phases: Draw a sample from a probability distribution. filexlib. The cross-entropy method (CE) developed by R. Rubinstein is an elegant practical principle for simulating rare events. The method approximates the probability of the rare event by means of a family of probabilistic models. The method has been extended to optimization, by considering an optimal event as a rare event.
It is shown that the Cross-Entropy method yields a speed-up over all three techniques of estimation of network reliability estimation: Crude Monte Carlo, Permutation Monte Carlo and Merge Process. Consider a network of unreliable links, modelling for example a communication network. Estimating the reliability of the network—expressed as the probability that certain nodes in the network are

This book is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the cross-entropy (CE) method. The CE method started life around 1997 when the first author proposed an adaptive algorithm for rare-event simulation using a cross-entropy minimization technique.
Cross entropy is a measure of the entropy difference between two probability distributions. Assume the first probability distribution is denoted by A and the second probability distribution is denoted by B. The average number of bits required to send a message from distribution A to distribution B is referred to as cross-entropy.
The toolbox includes functions for single- and multi-objective optimization. Functions for evaluating the quality of the obtained Pareto front, in multi-objective optimization, are also comprised. The toolbox also incorporates examples (see User Guide.pdf) for both single- and multi-objective optimization problems.
Cross-Entropy Method is a simple algorithm that you can use for training RL agents. This method has outperformed several RL techniques on famous tasks including the game of Tetris⁴. You can use this as a baseline³ before moving to more complex RL algorithms like PPO, A3C, etc. There are several variants of CEM, however, the structure defined
The cross-entropy (CE) method is a new generic approach to combinatorial and multi-extremal optimization and rare event simulation. The purpose of this tutorial is to give a gentle introduction to the CE method.
